About the Course:
The 35km 5 Trigs Circuit visits the eastern and western sides of the Tamar Valley. By the time you are done, you will have covered a variety of old and new urban areas, streets, roads, trails and untracked areas. On a clear day, the views from 4 of the 5 Trig Points are amazing!
Trig Points are situated on hill tops so they can be seen easily. As a result, there are some decent hill climbs and descents to cover in the 5 Trigs Circuit. In total, there’s 871m of elevation to get up and down – that’s on top of your 35km walked.
Each session covers about 12km and takes approximately 2 hours each. On the flatter sections, we’ll cover more territory. Where there are more hills, we’ll have more elevation but less distance.
Who is leading this program?
John Ralph is the owner of Ascent Fitness and leads walking fitness programs in urban, trail and mountain environments.
Whether getting ready for distance walking events, pacing out some trail running routes, or just enjoying walking outdoors more, John has had great success in encouraging walkers to become fitter for life, more skilled to stay safe in the outdoors and more confident in the next adventure of their own.
Transport Info
The participants are asked to assist with transportation for each walk. Prior to the session volunteers will be called for, and vehicles are left at the end point. When the course is going near your house or close to where you come into Launceston, that’s the best time to put your hand up!
The group completes the session and are driven back to the start point. Each session commences where the previous session ended. To participate in the car shuffle, you must wear a mask.
What is a Trig Point?
Trignometric Points (Trig Points for short) are fixed structures whose locations are very accurately measured. They are used for lots of things from accurately marking boundaries, to measuring the size of the earth.
They often worked in a series, with one being visible from the next. This meant sticking them on hills. Although Launceston would have had more Trig Points than are there today, there are 5 around the Greater Launceston area that we can get to.
So, we designed a circuit that visits all of them and it turned out to be quite fantastic!
It’s time to commit! Registration is easy – see below, or contact John with any questions.

Am I ready for this?
For the length of the walk toilet stops are an esential part of an enjoyable day out! There are four public toilets along the way, but our strong advice is to be as prepared as you can be before we start.
Please note: if you have any challenging bowel conditions (temporary or chronic), this group activity may not be suitable for you.
If walking 35km in 8 hours (broken up over 4 sessions) is a considerable step up from where your fitness is right now, or if you have any underlying health issues that can be exacerbated by 8 hours of exercise, speak with your GP before registering. You can also book in with John for a walking fitness test – this is a great way to find out where your fitness is and find out if you’re up for it. Just Message John Here for more info!
