Do I need bushwalking experience?
Introducing people to Tassie’s amazing outdoors is one of our favourite things!
We will be there with you to guide, assist, support and encourage you. At the end of the program, you will be amazed at how far you have come and the skills you now have.
Before the end of the program, we’ll also have a great packing session with equipment experts to make sure your pack fits as comfortably as possible.
So, by the end of the program, you will know all the gear you need (and all the gear you don’t need!).
Bushwalking and Mountaineering – what’s the difference?
Meanwhile, you are mountaineering when you need to use your hands and feet to get where you want to go. You will be scrambling up and down rocks from time to time.
What mountaineering is not is rappelling off cliffs using ropes. That’s rock climbing and there isn’t any of that in this program.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is there list of proposed hikes?
Tassie’s weather is highly variable, even more so in the colder months. Each week, we will be watching the weather and heading to where weather is best.
Is there a set time for the hikes?
7.30am departure is a good guide. But if there is a walk that is a bit further away from Launceston, we’ll be recommending an earlier departure for that session.
What time do the hikes end?
That can vary, but we intend to finish the hike in daylight.
How does info for each session get shared?
Once you have registered, you will be invited into a super secret Facebook group that is only for Winter BAM participants. That’s our communication hub.
Who is leading this program?
John Ralph is the owner of Ascent Fitness and leads walking fitness programs in urban, trail and mountain environments. Whether getting ready for distance walking events, pacing out some trail running routes, or just enjoying walking outdoors more, John has had great success in encouraging walkers to become fitter for life, more skilled for staying safe in the outdoors and more confident in the next adventure of their own.
He will train you for walking in Tassie’s special places and get you ready for your own upcoming adventures. His goal is to see you improve grow your fitness, knowledge and confidence for outdoor adventures.
Do I need to be fit to participate in this training program?
For many of Ascent Fitness’ walking programs, we’ll take you off the couch! But the Bushwalking and Mountaineering program needs you to come with a little bit of fitness onboard.
We will be heading to some of Tassie’s incredible, but remote places where we will need all contributing to a good time and, if the unexpected happens, be there for each other. But it is a program for bushwalking and mountaineering, not the special forces, so it’s not going to be extreme.
If you are unsure if you are ready for this program, there are 2 people you should consider talking to: you can talk to John about what challenges are involved, then talk to your GP too. You might also consider the Ascent Fitness Walking Fitness Test which will tell John all he needs to know about where you are at.
